Why Don't Our Black and White Tiles Use a Pure Black and Pure White Contrast?
A point of difference with genuine European pattern tiles is that manufacturers rarely apply a pure black and a pure white together. Combining the two at full strength creates a very harsh, high-contrast finish that reads as overly graphic once it's laid across a full floor.
All of our Spanish manufacturers soften this combination — either by introducing subtle warmth into the black tones or by cooling or warming the white — to reduce the extreme contrast while keeping the pattern crisp and legible.
- Softer, more liveable contrast — than a stark black-and-white print, so the pattern feels considered rather than harsh.
- Subtle warmth or cooling in the glaze — avoids an overly graphic look while keeping the design crisp.
- Consistent pattern alignment when laid — misalignment is not an issue with our Spanish-made tiles.
- Softer grey and vintage-inspired tones — available alongside the classic black and white pieces in this gallery.
Visit our Leichhardt showroom to see the full range of tones in person and compare how each manufacturer approaches the black and white palette.
Are Porcelain Pattern Tiles a Practical Alternative to Encaustic Tiles?
Traditional black and white encaustic tiles are made from pressed cement, with pigment set into the surface during curing. It's a beautiful, time-honoured look, but cement is porous — unsealed tiles are prone to staining, and the pattern can wear down over time with foot traffic.
Our Spanish porcelain versions replicate the same black and white patterns using fired porcelain instead. Because the pattern is fused into the tile at high temperature, the tiles are non-porous straight out of the kiln, so no sealing or ongoing maintenance is needed, and the pattern resists fading and wear far better than cement.
- No sealing required — porcelain is non-porous straight from the kiln.
- Stain and moisture resistant — well suited to bathrooms, kitchens and entryways.
- Far more durable underfoot — than pressed cement, so the pattern stays crisp.
- Lower long-term cost — no resealing, and easier day-to-day cleaning.
It's a cost-effective and hardwearing alternative to traditional encaustic tiles, without adding to your laying costs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Black and White Tile Range
What is important when buying black and white pattern tiles?
Fired porcelain pattern tiles are a great choice because they require no sealing or specialised maintenance, unlike traditional cement encaustic tiles.
Where can I buy black and white tiles in Sydney?
You can find one of the largest ranges of black and white patterned tiles at the Kalafrana Ceramics showroom in Leichhardt, Sydney. We specialise in Spanish patterned tiles and Moroccan Zellige.
Do genuine European black and white tiles use a pure black and pure white contrast?
No. Our Spanish manufacturers avoid combining a pure black with a pure white, as this creates a harsh, overly graphic contrast. Instead they introduce subtle warmth into the black or soften the white, giving a more authentic pattern with consistent alignment when laid.
Does Kalafrana Ceramics service Greater Sydney and interstate customers?
