Every tile is cut and glazed by hand, so no two tiles are identical — colour, thickness, and glaze pooling vary from piece to piece, which is exactly what gives authentic Zellige its irregular, artisanal character. This handmade process also means genuine Zellige typically needs sealing, has a wider tolerance for size and edge variation, and generally carries a higher price point reflecting the labour involved.

European Zellige-look tiles are manufactured porcelain designed to replicate that same handmade glaze effect — the tonal variation, glossy pooling, and soft edge irregularity — but produced with modern kiln and glazing technology under controlled conditions. This gives them a few practical differences from genuine Moroccan Zellige:

• Consistent sizing — porcelain manufacturing holds tighter tolerances, making European Zellige-look tiles easier to lay with predictable grout lines.
• No sealing required — fired porcelain is non-porous, unlike genuine Zellige's raw clay body.
• More durable underfoot — suited to floors as well as walls, whereas genuine Zellige is generally recommended for walls only.
• Still hand-finished variation — premium European ranges retain visible tonal and glaze movement, so the artisanal look isn't lost.
